Heavy Hand Crafted Mexican Sterling Silver Wine Coaster & JarPresented are two marvelous Mexican sterling silver items fashioned in the tradition of William Spratling and Hector Aguilar. One piece is a cylindrical form with diagonal lines running across the body. The cover is a half tube shape with the same diagonal lines. the other piece is in the form of a bowl and also has the diagonal lines around the sides. I believe the covered piece to be a cigarette holder and the bowl is in the form of a wine coaster. Sometimes these coasters were lined with a piece of cork to prevent the silver from sweating through to the table. This item is probably missing its cork. It would be easy to replace the cork at any hardware store. Sets such as these were a popular item in the 1930s-1950s when this set was made. Silver made in Mexico during this time often combined the elements of sleek modernistic design with a rustic handcrafted element. These aspects combine to produce charming silver pieces such as the pieces presented here.
The covered jar is 3 3/8 inches high and 2 1/4 inches in diameter. The bowl is 1 5/16 inches high and 4 inches in diameter. The total weight is 349 grams or 11.2 troy ounces.
Each piece is is marked STERLING and has a makers mark that I do not know. The maker's mark looks like 2 or 3 B's combined. The pieces are handcrafted and finished quite nicely. They are in excellent condition with only a small dent (very minor) to the bottom of the jar and a small dent to the handle of the jar. These dents are totally inconsequential and very difficult to even notice. Otherwise, there are no breaks, no repairs, no damage of any kind.
